Is Dance a Sport?

Dance has many different styles, techniques, and choreography. The widely debated question is whether dance is a sport or not? Here is an opinion on one side of the topic.

The current dance coach at Central, Sheila Dixon, strongly believes that dance is a sport. Ms. Dixon has a strong influence on her dancers and if they are doing a so-called “sport.” She said, “Yes, dance is a sport, because sports require time, interest, passion, practice, and more, just like other sports like football, to be able to be able to play or do that specific sport.” She believes that dance is a sport because of the same physical activities and requirements that are needed from football and other sports of today.

Another opinion on dance is a dancer on the team, senior Aylee Suarez. She also, like Ms. Dixon, believes dance is considered a sport. Aylee said, “ Yes, dance is a sport considering that they practice like all of the other sports and need the time, effort, and flexibility to be able to do it.” She believes that in order to play a sport, just like others, you have to keep practicing and the amount of things you do to keep your stamina up is going to depend on if you are able to do the sport anymore

Both Ms. Dixon and Aylee believe that dance is a sport. They both have an agreement that dance is required to do many things to keep doing that sport. Like football which requires practice, time, and stamina, helps with playing in games and in football practice. So like any type of sport, you have different requirements for the person that is doing it to be able to do it.

So based on the responses of Central on whether or not dance is considered a sport, that says people in the dance community and outside of dance mostly can conculed the opinion that dance is a sport. Like any other sport, like football, they mostly agree on what makes that a sport and the comparison on which football, a sport, and dance are alike.
