With scores as high as the very walls they climbed, the Central climbing team completed their first competition last Saturday, November 9 against area teams from Hardin Valley, STEM, and homeschool.
Competing in the beginner level (grades 5.6-5.8), junior Olivia Carithers placed third overall. In the beginner plus level (5.9-10.b), junior Elle Baldriche scored 800 points landing second place in her category.
Seniors Sam Kenny and Caleb Williams competed in the intermediate category(5.10c-11c). Although it was his first competition with the team, Kenny placed third overall scoring 1250 points. Williams set sights high on some of the toughest climbs in the gym and came within a few moves of the send, placed sixth and scoring 750.
Also competing in the intermediate category was senior Lily Marcum, who placed fourth and cored 1049.8 points.
In the advanced/open category (11.d+), senior Wesley Johnson sent a beast of an 11.d route on his first attempt and finished the day with 1700 points and third place.
Coach Turner couldn’t have been more proud of the outcome. “Everyone worked hard and, more importantly, worked together with great energy and encouragement for each other.” Another first for the high school team was welcoming their middle school counterparts from Gresham – students, parents, and coaches are all optimistic for a great season ahead.
