Kendrick Lamar is the first hip hop artist to ever receive the award for his album “DAMN,” which went platinum.
The award was originally made for literature and only the best writers could receive it. It was expanded to music in 1943. Only classical and jazz artists have been rewarded in music. “The time was right,” said Dane Canedy, the administrator of the prizes. The jury who made the decision said it was completely unanimous and they stand by their choice. They felt Lamar’s album speaks volumes for the rap game.
In 2017 his album topped the charts with songs like “DNA,” and “HUMBLE.” Although Kendrick Lamar was robbed of the Grammy Award for the album of the year by Bruno Mars, he has received the highest achievement. He also received the Grammy Award for best rap album. He won 3 more Grammys last year for songs on the album.
